Title: A CERTAIN NIGHT (1 & 2)

Synopsis:
A desire for position and greed transformed into a wicked plot that left a pregnant woman blind and bewildered.
Review:
Ella (Nkiru Umeh) is a sharp businesswoman that was CEO of a group of companies. Her late mother left her the business and she became a wealthy woman as a result. She was happily married to John (Frederick Leonard) and they were expecting their first child.
Life seemed grand when tragedy struck. A group of men attacked Ella and left her blind. She was devastated and distraught but with the support of her loving husband they fought through the ordeal together. Who and why Ella was attacked was the mission of the movie.
Let’s Talk. This is a drama that started off with a bang but lost some steam. The movie drove us up a hill to find the culprits and then took some naps in between.
The story was slow moving in some instances and some scenes were just too long. For instance, there’s a scene in part one where John is mulling over his wife’s situation. We had to watch him think for three whole minutes – first in the dining room, then at the window, and then in the living room, sigh… There is a thing called edit!
As the story progressed we learned more about Ella’s business and we were introduced to the family members and her “so called” friends. By the end, the mystery unfolded and the conclusion was absurd and disappointing.
The movie was not difficult to watch but it also wasn’t the greatest story in the world. The fact that the culprits caused Ella to become blind was one thing but the brutal rape was unnecessary and didn’t jive with the grain of the story. Better yet, the punishment didn’t fit the crime, not that there was one.
As for technical issues, cinematography and sound were good however, in one of the car scenes the camera could be seen in the rear view mirror.
Performances were decent. Most notable were Frederick Leonard and Belinda Effah. Frederick played such a patient and gentle husband and Belinda Effah is just an awesome actress.
At the end of the day, this movie was unenthusiastic. Not every story should make it to the big screen. EJECT
