BATTLE MAN

Starring: Van Vicker, Queen Nwokoye, Chika Ike

Synopsis:

A young man returns from the military believing he’s HIV positive and then ruins his marriage when he confides in another woman instead of his wife.

Review:

Austin (Van Vicker) volunteered for the military. While there, he had his share of women and prior to his return home, he was diagnosed with HIV. His loving wife had no idea why he wasn’t making love to her but he was afraid of telling her and even more fearful of infecting her.

Austin, in all of his despair, met Grace (Queen Nwokoye). She was a kind and supportive nurse that provided his medication and she quickly became his confidant.

Through Grace, Austin found out he was actually HIV negative and the exciting news led to them making love for the first time. But it was a one-time deal and Austin rushed back to his wife to save his marriage. Austin’s life resumed a sense of normalcy until Grace announced she was pregnant six months later.

Let’s Talk. Another love triangle. But this one was well-acted, compelling, and raised some good points. The issue was that Austin had two women; one was his wife and the other gave him a new lease on life. Which one should he choose? These types of situations never work out for the parties involved because someone always loses.

What was interesting were the characters. Grace (Queen Nwokoye) started off as a nurturing soul but when she began to feel that Austin was jerking her around, she became a b*tch. Austin had the opposite effect; he was a warrior that signed up for the military but his personal life turned him into a wuss.

To delve little further, Austin didn’t protect his wife. He frolicked enough to believe he was HIV positive and even when he realized he was misdiagnosed he still had unprotected sex with Grace! And this time produced a child! He deserved some sort of punishment and maybe our writer, Tchidi Chikere, had the right idea with his drastic conclusion of the story.

There’s a scene when Grace spilled the beans and told Austin’s wife about their affair. (Drama, drama). When Austin caught up with her he asked her “now that you’ve ruined my happiness and my wife is filing for divorce, has it cured your loneliness?” Pow. What a question. In essence, is revenge really the answer?

The truth of the matter is that even after Grace exposed Austin she was still a single woman about to raise a child out of wedlock. Nothing changed. That was the case whether she dropped the bomb or not. But from her perspective, she wasn’t happy so why should Austin be when it was he that caused her unhappiness?

Men think they can impregnate the “other woman” and then go back to living happily ever after with their wives. Now, in these situations, there’s enough blame to go around but the bottom line is to leave married people alone. They’ve got nothing to offer but their marriage certificates.

Overall the movie was well acted and that compensated for the moments that were dull. Van Vicker displayed the despair of an emotionally ruined man and his chemistry with Queen Nwokoye was pretty good. RECOMMEND
