Title: BEST HONEYMOON (1 & 2)
Sequel: WISE IN LAWS (1 & 2)
Starring: Majid Michel, Ufuoma Ejenobor, Ngozi Ezeonu, Chinyere Nwabueze
Synopsis:
Three guys made a pact when they were younger but when one changed his mind it created discord in the friendship.
Three friends made a pact as young boys to sleep with each other’s girlfriends. When Philip (Majid Michel) became engaged, he was no longer interested in the foolishness. His friend, Bright (Seun Akindele) once allowed him to have sex with his girlfriend so Bright was hell bent on keeping the deal. When Philip married his fiance, it led to the subplot of the story where the in-laws clashed over class and status.
Let’s Talk. This a drama. As for the storyline with the guys, the bottom line is that Bright arranged for Philip and company to have their way with his then girlfriend and he then sought some sort of justice with Philip’s fiancé. Needless to say, this was an absolutely tasteless and stupid story.
Bright committed rape in his past and we did not see regret from him. If he were remorseful he would have ended the silly deal with his friends. At one point Bright confessed his crime of rape but it went unpunished because the victim didn’t report it to the police.
What may have been an interesting story would have been to see Philip’s wife struggle with whether she wanted to stay married to Philip after she learned of his past transgressions. This would have added more depth to the character but the writers obviously went elsewhere.
The flip side of this movie, which ultimately became center stage was the war between Philip and his wife’s parents. Philip’s family was educated, successful people and his wife’s parents were unpolished. The fighting between them was hilarious and Ngozi Ezeonu was in rare form as she abandoned the nurturing, maternal roles she sometimes plays.
The family dynamics was a story on it’s own and made the storyline with the guys completely unnecessary. As a matter of fact, the family scenes generated such a high, especially with the ticklish dialogue, and when the movie flipped back to the guys, it instantly draining. The two stories don’t coalesce and shouldn’t have been on the same DVD.
The in-laws segment was funny and only this part of the movie can be applauded. In terms of faults, what’s missing are subtitles for dialogue that was spoken too fast or in the native language.
In terms of acting, most of the roles are well acted. I approve of one story line and disapprove of the other therefore, “Best Honeymoon” gets a reluctant RECOMMEND
