Title: COULD THIS BE LOVE? (1 & 2)
Starring: Majid Michel, Nana Ama McBrown, Kojo Nkansah
Synopsis:
A woman feeling neglect from her fiancé turns her attention to a financially inept guy that seems to bring her heart joy.
Review:
Irene and Fred (Nana Ama McBrown & Majid Michel) were a seemingly happy couple but problems lurked in their relationship. Irene felt neglected when Fred spent more time on office matters than with her. She suspected he was having an affair but he denied it.
One day she appeared unannounced at his job and walked in on a woman in the midst of coming onto him. Instead of confronting the situation head on she left the office and went home to pack her things.
Meanwhile, Ahuofehene (Kojo Nkansah) was a local guy that was down on his luck. He was unemployed and broke until he found work at a gym as a janitor. It was the very gym where Irene worked out and the two became acquainted. As they spent time together Irene reconsidered her relationship with Fred and believed she had fallen in love with Ahuofehene.
Let’s talk. This is a misguided romantic comedy that started off good but then devolved into nonsense. Irene moved out of the house and felt that she and Fred needed some space in the relationship. But when Fred was spending so much time at work was that not space in the relationship?
Irene complained that he didn’t spend enough time with her and then decided that she needed time away from him. Sigh… So she wanted space in the relationship but on her terms not Fred’s??
The story is basic at best and there’s very little drama or intrigue. The attempt at humor with comic actor Kojo Nkansah actually slowed the story down. The movie also suffered from an overabundance of unnecessary dialogue.
It’s a shame that so much time was devoted to the friendship between Irene and Ahuofehene especially because they weren’t going to wind up together. Fred and Irene had so much chemistry together and instead of utilizing it, it was wasted.
The bottom line is that the Irene character felt neglected by her fiancé and then tried to fill a void with another void. In what way was Ahuofehene the man of her dreams? The two men in her life were like night and day. Fred was a lawyer and Ahuofehene was a janitor. Was the audience supposed to root for Irene and Ahuofehene to be together? They were an unlikely couple and they were painful to watch.
As for technical issues, there were problems with sound. In some scenes the music was so loud that it interfered with the dialogue. When, oh when, will filmmakers get this right?
In terms of performances, they were satisfactory. Majid and Nana looked good together and were believable as a couple but their relationship was somehow placed on backburner.
Although there were some funny scenes, the overall structure of the story, and the story itself, wasn’t impressive. Could this be love? Obviously not. EJECT
