Synopsis:
Chuma and his girlfriend battle an obsessed woman that felt entitled to his love after she helped him with a legal situation.
Review:
Chuma (Alexx Ekubo) grew up an orphan and under the care of an uncle. His uncle hooked him up with a job at a car dealership but the gig didn’t work out because a customer’s car was stolen and Chuma was blamed for it and then jailed.
It turned out that the customer’s cousin, Sherry (Onyii Alex) vouched for his innocence because he had helped her out of car trouble previously. Thanks to her, Chuma was released but he had nowhere to stay so she opened her home to him and then her heart.
Chuma later got a new job as a driver to Karen (Victoria Egbuchere) who recently inherited her father’s company. He was quickly promoted from driver to head of accounting after the two became lovers.
When Sherry learned that Chuma and Karen were engaged to be married, she was beyond jealous and she made it her mission to make Chuma hers.
Let’s Talk. To get straight to the point, this is a baseless story about an erratic woman that was determined to get a man that had absolutely no interest in her. There’s a saying to never judge a book by its cover but based on the title of this movie, I knew it was a wrap before it even started.
It took over an hour just to establish the triangle between Chuma, Karen, and Sherry. The writer attempted to throw in some backstory about Chuma’s past and how he became an orphan and Karen’s parents were conveniently killed in a plane crash. None of it however, had any real bearing on the story.
Sherry’s reaction when she learned that Chuma was engaged to Karen was overkill not only because she was never involved with him, but because it wasn’t revealed to the audience that her feelings for Chuma had grown to an obsessive nature.
She actually disappeared from the story for a while and then she suddenly came back with a vengeance. When writing characters of this nature, there has to be an intricate understanding of the mentality. Even in Hollywood’s movie “Fatal Attraction” it was clear that the determined woman had sex with the man and when he dumped her, she wanted more.
Here, there was nothing leading up to Sherry’s crazed behavior. Chuma didn’t lead her on, there wasn’t even a kiss or a fantasy about him therefore, her erratic behavior was unjustified and came out of nowhere.
In addition, the story set-up was too long and there were some dry moments along the way. One scene in particular was when Karen was at her office sitting at a basically empty desk pretending to be a CEO. Instead of having her type on the computer, she should have been directed to say something that was businesslike or authoritative. Sigh…
There was another unlikely scene where Karen, the supposed CEO, allowed her secretary to send a complete stranger into her office. Really? What CEO lets an unknown, uninvited, visitor into their office? Of course, the person was Sherry and the two exchanged words over Chuma which was so b*tchy and silly.
Performances? The only person worth watching was Alexx Ekubo – not that he was mind-blowing but his portrayal of the character was realistic.
Video was satisfactory but in terms of audio, there were a few scenes where music overwhelmed the dialogue.
The underlying message? A woman can’t make a man love her. Is that news??
With its ill executed story and lost premise, “Don’t Fight It” is yet another nugatory Nollywood movie. EJECT
