Synopsis: A spoiled rich guy gets stuck on an elevator with a loud mouth pregnant woman and panics when she goes into labor.
Review:
Dare Williams (Timini Egbuson), lived the party life – late nights, drinking, and women. He was wealthy thanks to his mother’s generous allowance but when she became weary of his arrogance and irresponsible behavior she stopped funding him.
Luckily, Dare was a college graduate and he decided to find work. One day when leaving an interview he got on an elevator with a pregnant woman he had exchanged words with earlier. The elevator malfunctioned and while they were stuck, the woman went into labor putting Dare in a position to deliver her baby.
Let’s Talk. The storyline is fairly simple. We have a rich guy stuck on an elevator with an uninhibited pregnant woman of modest means. They started off on the wrong foot because she had accidentally spilled soda on him earlier. They met again on their way out and tensions rose as they got stuck together and she went into labor.
This drama took place around a time when Dare seemed to be at odds with everyone in his life. He was full of himself and the situation he encountered provided the humility he needed. It turned out that the person he had the worst relationship with – his stepfather, was the one who came to his aid.
The storyline was actually anemic but still managed to be engaging thanks to performances. It succeeded at generating laughs as it had many humorous moments. Dare’s reaction to the unexpected ordeal provided most of the humor as he suddenly went from party boy to doctor.
The problem with the movie was that it was unbelievable. For instance, when Abigail (Toyin Abraham) went into labor, Dare called everyone he knew except for the police, ambulance, or fire department! Who does that? If someone is stuck on an elevator and they’re lucky enough to still have phone service, the logical thing to do is call first responders! And the same goes for the building staff. They kept calling a guy from the maintenance department as though he was the only person on earth who could fix the problem.
Making matters worse was the conversation about the paternity of the baby. Was this really a topic of discussion during such an emergency? And then Abigail made a confession about the scandalous way her baby was fathered. C’mon now, really? So contrived. Also, the building supposedly had two backup generators and they both didn’t work? In Nigeria where there are power issues? Hmm…
Dare managed to deliver the baby but one has to wonder how many months was Abigail pregnant. Fifteen? That was one big baby! And you would think after all that trauma the filmmakers would show us how Dare and Abigail were finally rescued. But instead the movie cut to the scene where Abigail was in the hospital recovering.
The story ended on a happy note as Dare rekindled his friendships and formed a bond with his estranged stepfather. The characters were the winners in a story that had great potential however, the script needed to be reimagined and rewritten. EJECT
