Starring: Rukky Sanda, Yvonne Nelson, Alexx Ekubo, Daniel Lloyd
Synopsis:
A “gold digging” woman is out to marry the rich and famous and almost loses the man of her dreams when he leads her to believe that he’s broke.
This is a “dramedy” about Anna (Rukky Sanda), a ditsy, rich girl. She’s a proud groupie and her only desire in life is to date famous men with endless bank accounts. Her relationships with celebrities were always short-lived and they always dumped her.
Amidst her chase for superstars Anna was pursued by Chris (Alexx Ekubo), a local guy that appeared to be broke. She shut him down several times but he was relentless when it came to getting her phone number. It’s not until the night that she was stranded on the road and he came to her rescue that she paid him any attention.
Chris finally got his wish and spent time with Anna and she actually began to like him. She tolerated the fact that he was broke and deliberately refrained from becoming emotionally involved with him.
The night that Anna and Chris slept together for the first time didn’t end well. A woman from Chris’ life intruded and it turned out that not only was the woman his sister; they were a wealthy family. Anna was excited to learn that her boy-toy was rich and movie ended there leaving the audience to believe that Chris and Anna would marry.
Let’s Talk. It appears that Rukky Sanda Studios is great at scoring great locations, some of the best actors, good cinematography but the worst stories. The question of the day is what was the message in this movie? It’s not like the gold digging lead character actually fell for someone poor so what was the point of the story?
Even though Anna may have cared for Chris when she believed he was broke, it’s very obvious that she still loved his wealth more than she loved him. Here’s a better question: What was it that Chris loved about Anna? She was straight up materialistic, narrow-minded, and immature. How could someone of his stature possibly fall for that?
The entire production was miscast. We have full-grown people playing roles of what should be teenagers. To reference this, Anna’s father actually told her that she was “grounded.” Rukky Sanda is an adult. How does she think she looks playing a role where Daddy scolds her?
Speaking of looks, I gather she was going for the Reese Witherspoon look (from Hollywood’s Legally Blonde series) but she came off looking more like a low rent version of Nikki Minaj.
Rukky Sanda once again writes, directs, stars, and produces. As I mentioned in the “Keeping My Man” post, it’s fine if Ms. Sanda wants to wear many hats in her productions because if she’s funding the project then she has a right to call the shots. I do think however, that she gives the impression of being egocentric by continuously crediting herself in various categories when she should simply have one line that reads “Written, Produced & Directed by Rukky Sanda.”
As for performances, Alexx Ekubo did a fine job of playing the double-layered character of Chris. He was the only person worth watching. I would like to think that Yvonne Nelson is on a much higher caliber than this script. Maybe she was bored, had some free time, and accepted the role. She played the “BFF” well and there was no need to bring her “A” game to such an irrelevant production.
Rukky and Alexx as a couple was far from believable. Maybe if someone else played the lead other than Rukky Sanda the movie would have been a bit better.
At the end of the day, “Gold Diggin’ has a star-studded cast and Sexy Steel, Dammy Krane, and Denrele Edun made guest appearances. Although this is a lighthearted drama made in the name of fun, without a plot to guide it, it went nowhere and came off as fatuous and pointless. EJECT
