A young man and woman who originally met under hostile terms later learn that they were betrothed to each other by their late fathers.
Review:
Fiona and Derrick (Omotu Bissong & IK Ogbonna) were initially acquainted when Derrick drove his car into a puddle that accidentally splashed on her. Naturally, Fiona was angry and the two exchanged words unaware that their paths would soon cross again.
It turned out that their late fathers were partners that arranged for them to marry and carry on the business. Of course, they were adverse to the idea but out of respect for their parents they agreed to spend two weeks together to see if they were at all compatible.
Let’s Talk. When I initially came across this movie – “How Not to Fall in Love” I thought “Puhleeze – probably another dud.” But after a few minutes of watching, I was disgorging those very words. Finally, a romantic comedy that was actually funny!
It was all about the sexual tension between a man and a woman who were reluctant to admit to their attraction for each other. They met on a bad note, called each other all sorts of names, but they were later forced to get to know each other.
What made it funny was how they continued to humiliate each other to cover their true feelings. But it wasn’t all discord; the writer was clever enough to include some touching scenes that rattled the monotony of their disputes. The arguments ultimately led to a place of contentment.
The truth of the matter is that the premise was at times unbelievable but there were ample laughs that made any defects forgivable. Of course the story was predictable because we knew the love interests would wind up together. Romantic comedies tend to have a happy endings otherwise they would be categorized as a romantic dramas, right?
Performances? It appears that IK Ogbonna has a flair for comedy. Those that are familiar with my reviews know that I think he’s had some questionable performances but I’ve also stated that practice makes perfect. His performance here showed improvement.
In addition, IK’s chemistry with Omotu Bissong was perfection. Their interaction was natural and their facial expressions created most of the humor. They both gave confident performances and they managed to keep the movie inviting.
Video and direction sufficed although sound could have been improved in some areas. RECOMMEND
