Starring: Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde
Synopsis:
An African woman is imprisoned when she kills her American husband but it’s her sister that holds the key to her freedom.
Review:
Anya (Omotola Jalade Ekeinde) realized her dream when she left Nigeria for America and married a successful music producer. Fancy cars and a mansion were exchanged for a jail cell when she killed him in self-defense.
Anya was accused of murder and her sister, Chioma (Genevieve Nnaji) traveled from Nigeria to the U.S. to support her. She found Anya an attorney and together they came up with a defense but Chioma later discovered a secret that was crucial to Anya’s release from prison.
Let’s Talk: Ije: the Journey is a family drama that is based on a childhood bond between two sisters. As they reminisced on old times growing up in Nigeria their traditions were neatly unveiled to the audience.
This movie differs from Nolly/Ghallywood films in that it’s a courtroom drama. The blending of the African and American cultures was well done with a cast of mixed ethnicities.
In terms of acting, two of Africa’s top actresses played the starring roles and both gave stellar performances.
Ije is a well written and executed movie with some of its production shot in the U.S. It’s the movie to watch to experience a roller coaster of emotions. RECOMMEND
