Review:
“In Her Shoes” is a story of friendship and jealousy. Rukky Sanda and Oge Okoye play Funke and Peju who are best friends.
When Ken (Yemi Blaq) visited the village to see his uncle he met Peju for the first time. He’s a refined businessman who lived in Lagos and Peju saw him as a ticket out of the village. He left his business card with Peju and she misplaced it. But all was not lost because Funke stepped in and made nice to Ken’s uncle and managed to get her hands on Ken’s phone number and gave it to Peju.
Everything worked out and the story jumped to two years later when Peju was married to Ken. The next thing we know, Funke moved to the city to live with Peju and Ken to pursue her goal of becoming a seamstress. Ken found himself attracted to Funke and they had an affair right under Peju’s nose.
Let’s Talk. A woman sleeping with her best friend’s husband is so played out right about now. How many times do we have to see this story line? Funke felt justified sleeping with Ken because she felt Peju is living her dream. Frankly, Funke GAVE Peju her dream when she handed her Ken’s phone number. Why didn’t she just keep Ken’s number for herself? Clearly any of the two of them could have married him.
There was a scene where Funke had invited two of her girlfriends to stay in the house without Peju’s permission. Peju and Funke argued about this in front of the two women. Instead of the two women showing concern they sat there laughing and carrying on. How could they be having a good time when they could potentially be thrown out of the house? This was the worst scene in the movie and the women playing the girlfriends are horrible actors.
At the end of this drama when all secrets and emotions were exposed Funke slept with yet another one of her girlfriend’s men but this time she got beat up. This scene came out of nowhere and made no sense.
Performances? Both Rukky and Oge play the “rowdy village girl gone classy” pretty well, however Oge Okoye is the standout. Her performance engages right away.
“In Her Shoes” could have used improvement in story execution, however it did have some good moments and humor. The story concluded with subtitles conveying the outcome of the main characters.
Rukky Sanda writes and directs and although this drama is predictable it is one of her better movies. RECOMMEND
