PAPARAZZI: EYE IN THE DARK

Starring:  Van Vicker, Chet Anekwe, Syr Law, JJ Bunny, Koby Maxwell

Synopsis

An aspiring photographer who is about to get evicted lands a coveted job with a superstar when one of his photos erroneously solves a murder mystery.

Review:

Rich (Van Vicker) was jobless and about to lose his apartment if he didn’t find work soon. His love life was also headed south when his girlfriend lost interest and became involved with another man, Jimmy (Tchidi Chikere).

Rich got the bright idea to become a paparazzi photographer. He began snapping pictures of the rich and famous with the intent of selling his shots to a local gossip magazine. He hoped to work exclusively for Mr. Maxx (Koby Maxwell),  who was a superstar recording artist. When he met with Mr. Maxx in his office, he was rudely rejected.

Rich happened to be in the right place at the right time when Mr. Maxx’s “side chick” was found unconscious in a nightclub bathroom. She and Maxx’s main girlfriend, Pearl (Syr Law)  previously argued and since Pearl was on the premises when the girl was found, she appeared guilty.

Rich unwittingly got a shot of incriminating evidence that could have exonerated Pearl but he hesitated because he felt Mr. Maxx disrespected him. Meanwhile, Pearl was in prison protesting her innocence.

Let’s Talk. This movie deviates from the norm and has an intriguing mix of sex, lies, and videotape. Most of the characters are cheating and pictures of secret affairs were taken on a regular.

Koby Maxwell created the story and it may be somewhat indicative of his life in the limelight. For one thing, the movie doesn’t lag and Van Vicker, the lead actor, manages to keep the movie’s energetic vibe rolling.

There’s a scene where the writers took the opportunity to air some of Africa’s dirty laundry. The characters voiced their opinion that Africans don’t uplift each other. Actually, it’s Blacks in general who don’t elevate each other and fail to realize its detriment to our race as a society.

In terms of acting, performances sufficed for the most part. Koby Maxwell surrounded himself with professionals and he seemed more comfortable performing onstage than playing the character. The transition from musician to actor has its kinks but as Koby Maxwell takes on more roles he should become more relaxed…hopefully. RECOMMEND

Do you remember those days that you have to have your remote control to watch an African movie? The sound was jacked up. The picture quality was not something to talk about. This movie was the trend setter and l am glad to be part of it. Everyone who partook in this movie is doing very well and l praise God for a path well created.

Hey Kojo. I agree that movie production has gotten better but it still has some way to go. Technology is improving everyday so I know the African movie industry will continue to elevate to the best of their ability. Hopefully the producers of “Paparazzi…” are working on a new movie. Looking forward to it.
