Title: PART OF ME
Starring: Christabel Ekeh, John Dumelo
Synopsis:
Twin sisters fall in love with the same man and become pregnant but little do they know, he has an unearthly agenda.
Review:
Gloria and Grace never experienced sibling rivalry until Benson (John Dumelo) entered their lives. Gloria worked for him as a secretary and became his lover while Grace was employed as a police officer.
Grace was surreptitiously attracted to Benson and she had an affair with him. Of course, Gloria found out but Benson had already decided to marry Grace because she was pregnant. Shortly after, Gloria discovered that she was pregnant as well and it was simply discord between all involved.
The subplot was about the women’s mother who had been hell bent on revenge since college days when she discovered she was pregnant and was abandoned by their father.
Let’s Talk. This is a convoluted and confusing story about sisters that got pregnant for the same man. Sigh… First of all, Grace’s secret attraction to Benson came out of nowhere. There was no sign that she had feelings for him until she unexpectedly announced that she was in love with him. The problem here is that the filmmakers followed through with a story idea but failed to build the emotional layers necessary for a potent drama.
The backstory with their mother was confusing. Her storyline intertwined the with love triangle and it left a slew of questions. I don’t want to give too much of the story away but I came away not understanding what the hell was going on and it’s certainly not worth watching again but it seemed that the sisters got caught up in their mother’s revenge and were both pregnant for the spirit of Benson. Yes, his spirit and it gets worse… The story was ridiculous.
There were other issues such as when Gloria busted Benson with her sister. In this scene we didn’t even get to see her reaction. And then in a subsequent scene it seemed like she was just finding out about the affair the first time (when she already knew) and then we saw her shocking reaction which should have been in the prior scene.
Clearly, story execution was sloppy. There were some nice musical choices that the scenes didn’t live up to. It’s like the movie was just thrown together – by all the wrong people. But guess what? It all started with a bad story.
I’m beginning to think that whenever Jose Tolbert and Paulina Oduro are in a movie to just look the other way. I’m not sure if it’s their acting or the writing but somehow most of the movies that I’ve seen them in were whack!
Performances? Chistabel Ekeh played both Gloria and Grace. As an actress, she has potential and she’s normally pretty good. I gather her attraction to the movie was the opportunity to play dual roles. As for her portrayal of the characters, I saw a physical difference but there wasn’t much else that distinguished identical sisters.
Sound was wishy-washy, stifled in some instances, and not aligned with video in others…as usual…
At the end of the day this movie was a hot mess. There were loads of misspellings – “Months later” was spelled “Monnts later.” “Village Extras” was spelled “Village Exits” and the names of talent was incorrect as well. It was just unprofessional and amateur on many levels. EJECT
