Starring: Alexx Ekubo, Victoria Egbuchere
Synopsis:
A young man that recently experienced heartbreak tries love again and this time falls for a woman that’s financially out of his league.
Review:
Collins (Alexx Ekubo) was recently kicked to the curb by his ex-girlfriend because she became weary of his destitute economic situation. His best friend, Dave (Ifeanyi Kalu), avoided that problem because he pretended he was rich in order to have his way with women.
Gina (Victoria Egbuchere) was the beautiful offspring of an oil tycoon and she flaunted her father’s name to get whatever she wanted. Collins met her by chance and she intrigued him. She was reluctant to date him at first because he was financially below her standards but she eventually came around and gave him a shot, while she shielded a deep, dark, secret.
Let’s Talk. This appeared to be an attempt at a fairytale romance but failed miserably. First off, the development of the relationship between the love interests was null and void. Secondly, the story layout was inefficient.
The movie poster reminded me of the movie titled Champagne but the two movies didn’t come close.
The subject was social class – the poor dating the rich. A new story theme? I think not. It actually could have been a decent movie but it felt lifeless because it was missing the passion and emotion required for a love story. In addition, the drama was watered down due to poorly acted, frivolous, subplots.
The movie ended with one of those “happily ever after” scenes where the couple strolls alongside the beach. Romantic, right? But those scenes should have been inserted earlier in the movie so the audience could share in their transition to an intimate couple. It was difficult to connect with them when one minute Gina treated Collins like yesterday’s news and the next they were madly in love.
Speaking of the end, there was an unexpected twist that didn’t enhance the story any and by then it was too late to patch things up.
The flip side is that Alexx Ekubo and Victoria Egbuchere were actually compatible. They looked great together but sadly the inept story took their chemistry out to sea.
Performances? Hmm…there wasn’t much to praise in this department. Alexx Ekubo did Alexx Ekubo and I don’t think I’ve seen Victoria Egbuchere before. She was okay.
Some of the co-stars gave sub par performances that makes one wonder how on earth they got the part in the first place. It’s true that actors have to start somewhere but sometimes they ruin what could have been a decent movie.
Overall? A disappointment. EJECT
